Green Globe Certification
Green Globe is the global benchmark certification and improvement system for sustainable tourism. It is based on Agenda 21 and on the development of principles approved by 182 countries at the United States Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit. It provides companies, communities, and consumers with a path to achieving sustainable tourism.
The Green Globe certification process has three steps known as A, B and C, or Affiliate, Benchmarked, and Certified. In Grupo Mayan Nuevo Vallarta and Puerto Vallarta, they are pleased to have achieved this certification and to operate under its principles; efforts to receive this certification were initiated in September 2005.
To obtain this certification, they established a complete environmental management system with an emphasis on the reduction of the use of energy resources and clean water. Great importance is given to the separation, re-use, and recycling of waste; this significantly contributes to diminishing the volume of garbage sent to the dump.
Other changes involved replacing chemical cleaning products with biodegradable products, not using non-biodegradable products such as styrofoam, and seeking out local suppliers in order to promote community development.
Once awarded, certification must be renewed every year.
